On the 1st of July, The Future Leap Network hosted a hybrid event titled “Your Business, Greener” at the top of the pier in Weston-Super-Mare. This event was kindly sponsored by North Somerset Council. Before the event began, the attendees enjoyed some pre-sessional networking both online in breakout rooms, and in person over coffee and breakfast.
Katherine Piper, Director of Partnerships at Future Leap welcomed attendees online and in person. Katherine highlighted the benefits of joining the network and ran through plans for the Festival of Sustainable Business starting in the Autumn of 2021. Speakers included:
· Owen Hewlett, Chief Technical Officer, Gold Standard
· Bridget Petty, Executive Member of Climate Emergency and Engagement, North Somerset Council
· Clare Morris, Founder, Good and Proper
· Bridget Petty, Executive Member of Climate Emergency and Engagement, North Somerset Council
Bridget Petty kicked us off with the conversation around sustainability in local councils. Her involvement in the Green Party supported her delivery in sharing her expertise around the complexity of our supply chain whilst touching on the topic of how to make sustainability more accessible to the wider public.
Owen Hewlett, Chief Technical Officer, Gold Standard
We swiftly moved onto the topic of economics, guided by Owen Hewlett who was representing North Somerset Economic steering group. Owen spoke about the impending changes in the economy, and what key components of our businesses have to change in order to meet the onsets of our adapting economy.
· Clare Morris, Founder, Good and Proper
We finished off with Claire who owns and runs a local zero waste shop. Her enthusiasm and passion for everything sustainable was absolutely felt by those who attended. She nurtured us with the confidence to start making change by educating us on the ways we can create closed loop systems to ensure that nothing from our organisations lives a linear life.
All speakers were asked questions from the audience. Several questions came from local Weston-Super-Mare businesses both online and in person at the event.
Close
Katherine closed the event after another opportunity for networking, thanking all the speakers and attendees, which without our events calendar would not be possible. Many thanks to our sponsors North Somerset Council.
