On the 25th of May, The Future Economy Network (FEN) and Future Leap hosted a morning event entitled “Coping with Scoping: What about Carbon in the Supply Chain?” which was attended by a range of delegates both physically at the Future Leap Hub and virtually on Zoom. Before the event began, the attendees enjoyed some pre-sessional networking in small breakout rooms and in-person, facilitated by the FEN team.

Lauren Fields, Business Community Coordinator at Future Leap welcomed attendees, sharing her excitement to be hosting several events in a hybrid format, enabling people to attend in person under COVID-19 safety guidelines. Lauren highlighted the benefits of joining the network and ran through plans for the Festival of Sustainable Business, in light of new Government guidance towards COVID-19. Speakers included:

  • Nicola Steen, Head of Partnerships, Redshaw Advisors Ltd

  • Elly Deacon Smith and Matt Hayes, Founding Directors, Arbor Architects

  • Holly Browne, Principal Consultant (Sustainable Apparel) Anthesis Group

Nicola Steen discussed ‘destination net zero: taking the journey together’. She covered the starting point and the path to net zero, connecting scope one, scope two and scope three, and what actions are more effective to reduce emissions in the economy.

Elly Deacon Smith and Matt Hayes discussed how as our buildings become higher performing and more energy efficient, embodied carbon emissions from their construction and re-fit start to outweigh the emissions associated with operating them. They detailed how in order to meet carbon reduction targets, we need to interrogate the materials we’re specifying and ensure our supply chains are working hard to reduce emission associated with processing raw materials, transporting and manufacturing them into the components delivered to site. Elly and Matt explored some of the ways in which designers can reduce these emissions and ensure we are avoiding carbon hotspots in our supply chains.

Holly Browne informed us about the materials that fashion and apparel products are made from, and gave an overview into some of the climate challenges behind those materials. She also provided light on how to start considering a fibre strategy to reduce your climate impacts.

Throughout the presentation the physcial and the virtual audience were encouraged to think of questions which stimulated widespread debate and discussion at the Q&A.
