‘Developing in Heritage Cities’ Business Breakfast co-hosted by The Future Economy Network, and BuroHappold.
Tuesday 9th July 2019 saw an exciting trip to Bath for a business breakfast on Developing in Heritage Cities. The breakfast was hosted by BuroHappold Engineering and took place at their beautiful offices by the river in Bath. It was attended by public, private and third sector representatives and came about in recognition of the need to address sustainable development within heritage buildings and cities.
Attendees were welcomed by the Director of The Future Economy Network, Katherine Piper. Katherine spoke about the benefits of subscribing to the Network.
A presentation was then delivered by Claire Thomas and Kim Collins, Director and Associate from Integral Engineering Design. They presented two different projects to showcase the unique challenges in developing in a UNESCO World Heritage city. They spoke about Archway, a new learning centre for the Roman Baths and a World Heritage Visitor Centre for the city, and Apex City of Bath, a new build hotel.
This was followed by a presentation by Polly Upton, Senior Architect at Architype. Polly spoke about how developing in heritage contexts provides challenges and opportunities on a number of different scales from buildings to landscapes, and for differing client needs. As case studies, she spoke about the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library building, and The Large Object Store at the Imperial War Museum.
Finally, Nicholas Trowles, Engineer at BuroHappold Engineering, delivered his presentation. He discussed the 'Bath Abbey Footprint Project' and how his team has been working with the Abbey replace the collapsing floor and upgrade the existing Victorian heating system with a sustainable solution.
After the presentations, there was time for Q+A and an exciting 60 second pitch session. Katherine concluded the seminar by talking about The Future Economy Network’s upcoming Festival of Sustainable Business, and other upcoming events.
