Consumerism and Behaviour Change

  • Future Leap and Online (Hybrid) 1-3 Gloucester Road Bristol United Kingdom (map)

Consumerism is at the crux of many of the environmental challenges that we now face.

Demand will continuously outweigh the supply, so how do we see this as an opportunity to leverage this in order to generate behaviour change, transitioning from wasteful spenders to conscious consumers?

Join us to discuss consumerism and behaviour change...and how we can make sustainable choices more accessible for all.

Future Leap are excited to welcome Business Declares, The Party Kit Network and Network members Customer IQ and Frank Water to speak at this event.

Government guideline and pandemic dependent, this event will take place physically and virtually. Both options offer the full event experience, including networking, Q&A and our famous 60 second pitches. Virtual attendees will need to B-Y-O-Breakfast!

If you purchase a physical ticket but the event is moved fully online, you can choose to have your ticket fully refunded or attend virtually with a partial-refund.

Ben Tolhurst, Director, Business Declares

In this session, Ben explores the role which consumption is playing in the climate, ecological and social crisis. He considers ways in which people can be more mindful of what they buy and how they buy it, and outlines ways in which we can connect, give and share meaning without resorting to mainstream consumerism.

Gideon Barker, Founder, Customer IQ

Gideon’s talk will be around the importance of being customer-centric in business and how thinking and acting with the customer in mind is a route to success. However, he would like to challenge some of the existing thinking about providing 'what customers want' by suggesting businesses should think more about providing 'what customers need' - ie instead of constant price reductions and quicker deliveries, think about more sustainable practices and building trust and loyalty this way. Gideon shall be presenting some data as well as some opinion and hope to raise some questions, particularly in the run-up to Christmas.

Katie Endacott, Head of Operations & Fundraising, Frank Water

How many physical gifts have you received that you simply haven’t needed, or wanted to donate to charity? Katie will be sharing top tips on how you can cut out the middle man, support a charity and still buy a gift for a friend or family member. This results in sustainable gift buying, getting that warm fuzzy feeling and ensuring that there isn’t another pile for the charity shop after Christmas.

Julie Savage, Board Member, The Party Kit Network.

Julie will give an overview of the Party Kit Network (PKN) and then to cover how the business model is operated by the PKN members with varying objectives.

The fundamental thread is the shared sustainable ethic and how this can be flexibly operated dependant on the desired aims of the PKN member.

Meet Our Speakers!

Ben Tolhurst, Director, Business Declares

Ben has spent 28 years in corporate life and has held senior positions in various FTSE100/large organisations, across a range of sectors including government, telco, energy, retail and real estate.

In 2020, Ben quit his job as UK Head of property and Asset Management for JLL to focus his time purely on working with businesses to accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis. As part of this mission, Ben is a Director of Business Declares, a not for profit organisation which recognises that businesses can be a force for good in tackling the climate, ecological and social crisis. Business Declares directly, and through its member network, supports businesses to raise awareness of, and most importantly, take meaningful actions to, address this crisis.

Gideon Barker, Founder, Customer IQ

Gideon has over 20 years of experience working in customer research and has been running his own consultancy - now called Customer IQ - for over the last 10 years. His focus is on helping brands with 'customer discovery' research - to really get under the skin of customers and potential customers and understand their needs, motivations and pain points. Ask him anything related to research and customers.

Katie Endacott, Head of Operations & Fundraising, Frank Water

Frank Water is a charity and CIC. We don’t dig wells or install taps. We support the world’s most marginalised communities to sustainably manage their own water resources. In doing so, they can build a future where their families have enough water to live and thrive. Katie Endacott is Head of Operations & Fundraising at Frank Water, having worked in charities for over 15 years.

Julie Savage, Board Member, The Party Kit Network.

The Party Kit Network are a non-profit organisation helping to make parties more sustainable. They connect those planning a party with local party kits of reusable tableware and decorations.

By supporting more people to make the switch to reusables, they can dramatically cut the waste from single-use items like paper plates and plastic cups, helping to protect the planet. All party kits are run independently by people passionate about helping their communities reduce waste.
